Around the Town Guide to Hartsdale

By Christine Pasqueralle March 28, 2018

Hartsdale is a wonderful place for families to call home. Centrally located, it's about a 40-minute train ride to the city and easy access to all points in Westchester and beyond. Boasting some of the hottest restaurants in the county, fantastic playgrounds and all of your basic shopping needs, Hartsdale has it all. Here are some of the top spots to take the kids (and also some that may require a babysitter)

If you're looking for a burger that's better for you than the ones that come with a toy, check out Bareburger. In addition to beef, the organic menu features an array of burger options such as bison, turkey and veggie, and has a very hip yet kid-friendly vibe.

Delicious wood oven pizza isn't the only thing Frankie and Fanucci’s does right. Its cozy setting works well for a meal with or without the kids. The space even features a “pour your own” taproom with a varied selection of craft beer and wine. Salads, sandwiches and pasta round out the menu.

The babysitter is booked for date night but you don't know where to go? Try the recently-opened O Mandarin for a new take on an authentic Chinese cuisine experience. The interior is sleek and the menu features Mandarin and Sichuan dishes ranging from Peking duck, crispy whole fish and thousand-layer tofu.

Don't feel like cooking but not in the mood to eat out? Try takeout from Ribs on the Run. In addition to their scrumptious ribs, choose from a selection of chicken, seafood, wraps, mac and cheese and much more. Surely everyone in your household can find something they’ll love.

Open on Saturdays from June through November, the Hartsdale Farmers Market at the train station is small but has a great selection of fruits and veggies, baked goods, flowers and more. It's a nice way to spend a leisurely Saturday.

Need some fresh air and a space for the kids to run around? Richard Presser Park is the perfect place to go. The playground has two large play structures - one for little kids and another for the older set, featuring a number of slides and even a rock wall. There’s also a variety of swings to choose from. Best part, if you need to pick up some items for dinner, Trader Joe’s is right across the street.

Westchester Greenhouse and Farms is perfect for your year-round garden needs. Beautiful blooms abound in the Spring while pumpkins and mums set the scene in the Fall. In the Winter, take advantage of its quaint farmstand-like store selling fresh produce as well as homemade pies, cider donuts, jams and more.

Robert Rosenberg of Hartsdale Pediatricians provides families with stellar care in a small-practice setting. The office is part of the Boston Children’s Health Physicians (BCHP) network and is locally-affiliated with Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital.

Rainbow Nursery School offers half-day programs for 2, 3 and 4-year-olds. The school emphasizes the three S’s - sharing, socialization and self-esteem in an academic yet nurturing environment.

Creative Beginnings Children’s Center provides year-round, full-day educational and child care options for working families. Programs are for children ages 18 months through 5 years and focus on respect and kindness for all cultures.

Coming soon:

Soon enough, you won’t have to drive all the way down Central Avenue to Yonkers for your Shake Shack fix. The popular burger place is set to open Fall 2018 in the Dalewood II shopping center on Central Avenue.

Also opening soon on Central Avenue (near Trader Joe’s), The Rex, offering an intriguing combo of pizza and lobster. Another outpost recently opened on Long Island, featuring burgers and lobster.
