Fifteen Fun Museums for Kids in the Tri-State Area, Macaroni KID Guide

Are you a parent in the White Plains - Scarsdale - Rye area of Westchester County looking for fun things to do with kids? The Tri-State area is home to many amazing museums that are perfect for bringing children of all ages for exploration, creation, and learning. Here at Macaroni KID, we know that busy moms and dads benefit from having all the details on places to go in one informative place.  We've rounded up fifteen of our favorite museums in the tri-state area to help Westchester County parents with their research!

1.      Hudson River Museum

Saturday & Sunday, 11am–5pm
First Friday of each month, 5–8pm FREE

Unless otherwise noted, all events are free with general admission, and all workshop materials are provided.
Details: Large planetarium with different programs by age, staffed art projects, adjacent historical estate, beautiful views of the Hudson, ample free parking.

Programming available for days with no school.


2.  Westchester Children’s Museum

100 Playland Pkwy, Rye, NY 10580
Museum Hours:

Open 7 days a week from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Admission:

  • $14 per person

  • $12 for seniors

  • FREE for children under 1

  • FREE for Members 

  • FREE for active-duty military personnel and their families within the same household* (Proud to be a Blue Star Museum)

  • $3 per person presenting an Electronic Benefits Transfer Card (EBT) and valid form of photo ID. Good for up to 4 individuals per EBT card**


Details: Play gym, build your own roller coaster, art and science projects.  New exhibitions regularly added. One weekend a month includes additional thematic learning and events. Proximity to Playland and Beach.


3.      American Museum of Natural History
Central Park West & 79th St, New York, NY 10024

Reservations are required.

Museum Hours:

Open daily 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Admission:

Free for members
Pay what you wish pricing for non-members

Resident pricing (or suggested donations) range from $14 - $25 for general admission
Details: Planetarium, dinosaur skeletons, butterfly sanctuary, evolution and mammals exhibitions, rocks and minerals. Take the subway and pop into Shake Shack after or walk through Central Park.


5.       Whippany Railway Museum
1 Railroad Plz, Whippany, NJ 07981
Museum Hours:

April thru October Noon – 4:00 PM

The Whippany Railway Museum is open to the public Sundays Only.

For Special Events, the Museum is open from 12 Noon – 4:00 PM. On these days, the train generally operates at 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 & 4:00 PM. Check the Event Calendar for a complete list of dates, fares and train schedules.

Children 6 - 12 $3

Teens and Adults $5

Details: Christmas, Easter, Caboose, and Pumpkin theme train rides. Model trains, performers, vendors.

5.       The Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center
